Stimulating and relaxing the body

TYPES OF MASSAGE

  • iStock_000010801373XSmallSwedish Massage:  This is a traditional form of massage which can both stimulate and relax the body.  The skin, body and lymphatic systems are all stimulated boosting circulation, aiding in cellular renewal and removing toxic waste.  Tense muscles will relax, stiff joints loosen and nerves are soothed. An all-over feeling of relaxation and well-being is induced.
  • Hot Stone Massage:  During a hot stone massage stones are placed on various muscles.  Hot stones placed on the body allow heat to penetrate deep into the muscles and joints.  Blood vessels dilate and blood flow increases. Increased blood flow enhances movement of oxygen and other nutrients throughout the body.  The therapist will be massaging the body with stones as well as with the therapists’ own hands.
  • Deep Tissue Massage:  This type of massage is aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, which is also referred to as connective tissue.  It uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish Massage but the pressure is generally more intense.  The therapist usually focuses more on particular areas of concern or stressed areas to release chronic muscle tension and/or knots.  It may be more uncomfortable than a Swedish Massage, but it should not hurt.
  • Reflexology:  This massage involves applying pressure to distinct areas of the feet. The feet hold a map of the entire body and each body part has a corresponding reflex point. Accessing these relax points stimulates the body to clear any congestion which may cause imbalances.
  • Sinus Massage:  This thirty minute treatment focuses on the face, head and neck. This modality helps relieve sinus pain and congestion and promotes sinus drainage.
  • Pregnancy Massage:  Receiving a massage during pregnancy will help in the reduction of edema. It will also help in the reduction of varicose vein development and pain. It will also increase blood and lymph circulation and reduce blood pressure.  The client is propped up with pillows so she is as comfortable as possible.  Client must be out of first trimester to receive a massage.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER MASSAGE

  • Most clients will leave feeling very relaxed.
  • Some may feel sore the next day (depending on toxins and tight muscles).
  • To take away chronic knots and tension built up over the years requires an integrated program.  This should include regular massages, relaxation techniques, exercise and working on posture and patterns of movement.
  • Massage is a natural detoxifier.  It helps to break down the toxins in your body. It is very important to drink a lot of water before and after massage.  The water will help to flush toxins out of your body. It you choose not to drink water the toxins could stay broken up in your body and cause you to have flu like symptoms.
